A combined or dual form of waterproofing uses two separate forms of protection and is advocated by many third-party building warranty insurers and in BS8102:2009, where a single system: is deemed (after assessment) to be high risk, when the consequences of failure to achieve the required internal environment are not acceptable for the intended use, would not be accessible for repair or maintenance or when additional vapour checks are neccessary for a system which might otherwise produce unacceptable or uncontrollable levels of water vapour.
In general, combined forms of waterproofing comprise and external (type A) barrier system or an integral (type B) system used in conjunction with an internal barrier or cavity drain (type A or type C) system. This ensures that the structure offers primary resistance to water ingress, whilst the internal system deals with the high-risk factors by providing the second form of defence or water management capability – as is the case with a Platon cavity drain membrane specification.
The combination of an external barrier or integral protection used in parrallel with a Platon cavity drain membrane system is regarded as on of the most reliable and robust forms of waterproofing protection.

Triton Hydrolock is a bentonite membrane (often known as a ‘bentonite carpet’) comprising a mechanically bonded Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) composite of pulverised bentonite, embedded between two layers of geotextile. The internal natural sodium bentonite swells in contact with water to form a low permeability waterproofing barrier.
BBA certified Triton Hydrolock can be used externally on concrete to provide an effective barrier to the transmission of liquid water where Grades 1 to 3 waterproofing protection are required as defined in table 2 of BS 8102: 2022.
